The role
We're looking for an in-house Shopify Developer & Administrator to own the technical operation and ongoing improvement of our Shopify store. This is a hands-on technical role combining storefront development, custom app development, store administration, database work, and ownership of our app ecosystem.
You'll work directly with the owner, our Ecommerce & Marketing Manager, sales and operations teams, and outside developers. You'll turn business needs into reliable functionality, troubleshoot problems, and make the store easier to operate. Marketing will set campaign and merchandising priorities; you'll build and maintain the technology supporting them.
What you'll own
Shopify development: Develop and maintain themes, templates, sections, and custom storefront features using Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Improve product pages, collections, navigation, mobile usability, and the buying experience.
Custom apps: Build, deploy, and maintain custom Shopify applications and integrations. Own frontend and backend functionality, authentication, data storage, testing, monitoring, and ongoing support.
Store administration: Manage technical configuration for products, variants, collections, metafields, metaobjects, navigation, permissions, and store settings. Support bulk imports, catalog updates, promotions, and data quality.
App ecosystem management: Own the inventory, configuration, costs, permissions, and dependencies of our installed apps. Evaluate new tools, resolve conflicts, manage vendor support, and recommend when to configure an existing app, replace it, or build custom functionality.
Search and merchandising technology: Support the technical setup and operation of Searchspring and other search, filtering, recommendation, review, and merchandising tools. Work with marketing to implement and test the desired shopping experience.
Integrations and automation: Connect Shopify with HubSpot, product feeds, marketplaces, inventory, order, and fulfillment systems. Use APIs, webhooks, Shopify Flow, and other appropriate tools to reduce manual work and improve accuracy.
Database development and administration: Design and maintain databases supporting custom apps and integrations. Write and optimize SQL queries, manage schemas and migrations, configure access, and maintain backups and recovery procedures.
Troubleshooting and reliability: Diagnose storefront errors, app conflicts, slow pages, broken links, feed issues, and synchronization failures. Build useful logging, alerts, error handling, and recovery processes into custom systems.
Testing and releases: Use Git, development environments, and appropriate testing to release changes carefully. Maintain rollback procedures and document how the store, apps, and integrations work.
Marketing support: Build landing pages and promotional functionality, support tracking and technical SEO, and test the store ahead of major launches and shopping events.
Technical expertise required
Demonstrated experience developing and administering a production Shopify store.
Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Liquid, and Shopify theme development.
Experience personally building and maintaining a custom Shopify app or substantial integration in production.
Backend development experience with Node.js/TypeScript or a comparable stack, including server-side logic, authentication, and background processing.
Strong SQL and relational database skills, including schema design, query optimization, migrations, permissions, backups, and recovery.
Experience with GraphQL, REST APIs, webhooks, and reliable data synchronization, including retries and duplicate-event handling.
Ability to deploy, monitor, troubleshoot, and support the custom applications you build.
Experience managing third-party apps and evaluating their effects on performance, data, cost, and operations.
Sound practices for protecting customer data, credentials, and application access.
Ability to explain technical choices clearly, prioritize by business impact, and follow projects through to completion.
Ability to work full-time, in person in Riverdale, NJ 07457.
Experience should include writing and maintaining production code, as well as operating the store. A degree is not required.
Practical AI skills
Use Claude, ChatGPT, or comparable tools to improve development, troubleshooting, testing, documentation, and data workflows. You must understand, review, and test AI-generated code before release. Be prepared to demonstrate a workflow you use, explain its limitations, and show how you verify its results.
Additional experience we value
Searchspring, HubSpot integrations, Shopify Flow, and ecommerce automation.
Product information, inventory, ERP, order-management, or fulfillment systems.
Technical SEO, structured data, GA4, conversion tracking, and marketplace feeds.
Large product catalogs, product comparison tools, and consumer electronics ecommerce.
Computer hardware, employee workstations, business software, and general IT administration. This experience is useful for diagnosing routine issues and coordinating with outside IT providers; the primary responsibility is Shopify and its connected ecommerce systems.
How to apply
Apply with your resume and brief examples of:
A Shopify store you developed or administered and what you personally owned.
A custom app or integration you built, including its database and how you supported it after launch.
An AI-assisted workflow you use and how you check its output.
Share only work you are authorized to disclose. Finalists will discuss a relevant project and a short technical scenario. We'll explain the format and expected time commitment in advance.
